GCU Pathways

Pathway students enrol on the undergraduate BA (Hons) Risk Management at Glasgow Caledonian University. In the first two years, they study the HND Legal Services at Glasgow City College with the opportunity to progress to year three of the degree here on campus.

Organisations are legally, financially and morally required to manage their risk-bearing activities. Risk is an inherent part of business, and risk managers are prized for their skills by organisations of all types and in all sectors.

The BA (Hons) Risk Management degree is accredited by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the Institute for Risk Management (IRM) and offers a holistic approach to understanding risk that allows students to enter the industry sector at graduate level.

Choose to study Risk Management pathway if:

  • you want to help organisations identify and manage business and financial risks
  • you work best with lots of interaction from lecturing staff
  • you like working towards clear goals with a sense of achievement at the end of each year of study

Assessment

Our approach to the learning, teaching and assessment of our students is tailored to the academic needs of our students while preparing them for the job market, as well as their ability to operate independently as lifelong learners.

Our curriculum is designed to develop our students knowledge and understanding of risk management as an academic discipline, and to enable them to reflect logically and critically on risk theory and practice. In parallel with this, the curriculum is designed to promote employability. These skills are embedded throughout the programme and a wide range of methods are used to ensure the acquisition of professional, practical and personal development skills.

Teaching methods

Direct industry awareness and experience is central to our teaching, through the use of guest lectures and presentations at all levels. This is particularly important for our new students, as it helps them understand the sector in which they will eventually find employment.

A member of the Risk academic team acts as a careers tutor for students and assists them with their employability skills and graduate job search. This tutor acts a focal point for both graduate job and student placement opportunities.

Between Year 3 and Year 4, our students have opportunities to undertake paid summer placements in a diverse range of organisations, providing invaluable experience in the development of both professional competence and the graduate skills and attributes required by employers.

Professional Accreditation

Our BA (Hons) Risk Management Pathway course is accredited by both the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) and the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII).

The CII is the world's largest professional body for insurance, risk and financial services. The CII has over 115,000 members in more than 150 countries.

Our students have the option of taking additional CII units at a discounted rate; around a third of the amount charged to insurance and personal finance professionals.
