Course summary

This programme will help you develop your interest in, and specialist knowledge of, linguistics while learning Russian to a high standard and in its cultural context. After a period of political, social and economic transformation, Russia is playing an increasingly important role in global politics and, as the world’s largest country, has its fifth most widely spoken language. Study Russian with us and you will learn the language in the context of Russian culture and political history, past and present, including literature, art, music and film. Through the study of linguistics, you will learn how language is acquired, produced and understood; how it functions in interaction between individuals and in society; about its abstract structure and representation in the brain; and how it changes over time. Our Year 1 courses are streamed according to how much Russian you already know, so it does not matter if you are a complete beginner. Intensive language tuition, and a year spent studying in Russia, will teach you how to read, write and speak the language to a high standard, including in translation.
