Course summary

Many of the basic concepts underlying Western society found expression for the first time in ancient Greek or Latin, and - together with Danish, Norwegian and Swedish - they are the language of many highly influential literary and cultural works. Studying Scandinavian Studies and Classics helps us understand the world in which we live now, as well as shedding light on the past. On our programme, you have the opportunity to develop advanced spoken and written language skills while gaining the broad cultural education prized by graduate employers. You will spend Year 3 studying, teaching or working in either Norway, Denmark or Sweden. Edinburgh is the only university in Scotland, and one of only two in the UK, to offer undergraduate honours programmes in Scandinavian Studies, enabling you to learn modern Danish, Swedish or Norwegian in the context of Scandinavian culture and alongside Classics. You do not need previous knowledge of any of the languages as courses are available for beginners. Another attractive characteristic of this programme is its flexibility. This means that in Years 1 and 2, you will choose option courses drawn from a broad list of disciplines in addition to your core subjects.
