What is Secondary Education Mathematics PGCE?
We offer our students an exceptional training experience – if you’re looking for a lifelong, challenging and exciting career, teaching may be for you.

•
Mathematical Thinking
•
Representation and Structure

You will develop a deep understanding how children learn informed by knowledge of theory. You will explore the pedagogical skills of Mastery (inspired by the Shanghai Mathematics Teacher Exchange) including the themes of Coherence, Representation and Structure, Fluency, Variation, and Mathematical thinking and benefit from our links with local Mastery Champions and the “GLOW” Maths Hub. You will also be encouraged to reflect on up-to-date research on the latest mathematics pedagogy, making critical evaluations and considering how it might influence your ongoing practice.
You will explore all areas of the Mathematics National Curriculum including Number, Algebra, Ratio and proportion, Probability and Statistics and Geometry through your own subject knowledge enhancement and alongside the pedagogies that best support learning in each area.
You will explore practical skills relating to behaviour routines, planning, marking as well as resources and tools for teaching with technology, both in the classroom and online. You will have opportunities to work independently and collaboratively on group tasks. You will get formative feedback regularly throughout your taught sessions.
You will explore how to teach a wide a range of assessments, including Level 3 qualifications AS, A Level Core Maths with specialist input from the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme.
You will have the opportunity to become a pioneer of Education for Sustainable development (EfS) through the teaching and learning of Maths including enrichment learning with the Royal Institution Maths Masterclasses.
We were founded as a teaching college 175 years ago, and following the introduction of new quality requirements, our Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), have successfully achieved reaccreditation in 2022 by the Department of Education.
Our ITT courses have also recently been rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, with inspectors highlighting their ‘unique’ emphasis on sustainability and the University’s strong partnership with schools.
