Course summary

Make a real difference to the lives of adults, young people and children by choosing this Social Work course, accredited by Social Work England. You’ll study a wide range of issues that affect people’s lives – like homelessness, alcohol or drug misuse, mental health and disability – and learn how they inform welfare policy and safeguarding. Plus, you’ll develop the real-world, practical skills you need to become an effective social worker during many hours in placement in the community as part of your degree. We work with some of the biggest employers in the region and our local geography gives you opportunities in everything from inner cities and seaside resorts to market towns – giving you a breadth of experience for your future career.

Why study at Hull?

- Supported, hands-on learning: Our course sets you up with a professional learning team right from the start. This means you’ll be working alongside qualified, experienced social workers immediately. Combining theoretical study with practical learning on placement is the best way of gaining the skills needed to be an effective social worker. - Get a cash award: From the second year, you can apply for a Social Work Bursary from the NHS, which is worth £4862.50 a year. It doesn’t need to be paid back and you can apply for both your second and third year.- Accredited qualifications: This degree is accredited by Social Work England. This means that as soon as you graduate, you can register as a qualified social worker.

Where could this take me?

As this is an accredited social work course, many of our graduates work as social workers, supporting people in their community. The people-focused skills they have gained on the course are transferable to other careers too, though. Some graduates become counsellors or mental health practitioners, community workers, housing officers or welfare rights advisers. Others choose to go into the police, work in youth justice or children’s safeguarding, or become drug or alcohol practitioners.
