Course summary
Social work is about changing lives for the better. The Kent BA degree is based on the curriculum for Social Work and allows you to gain a broad base in the key issues related to social work, such as the values and ethics that underpin social work, knowledge informing practice, how social policies are formulated and put into practice, and the role of the law in social work. The curriculum is based on the Professional Capabilities Framework. There are also modules that focus on specific areas of social work with children and families and social work with adult service users and carers. Social Work is an area where it is important to consider a wide range of views and learn from the expertise of multiple stakeholder groups. Service users and carers are involved in teaching in a range of ways drawing on their experiences of receiving social care services. Social work practitioners also regularly contribute. We prepare students for practice through robust training including a module on Readiness to Practice and two-day observational practice learning in stage 1, as well as a 70 day placement in stage 2 and 100 day placement in stage 3. With a gold rating in the recent Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Kent social work programmes are delivered by experienced academic staff who are all qualified and registered social workers. The Social Work programme is delivered at the University of Kent’s Medway campus which benefits from a wide range of excellent new facilities and is easily accessible from London. You are taught by lecturers with diverse social work practice experiences and who are active in research and scholarship. The student body is a cosmopolitan mix of mature and younger students, from different ethnic backgrounds and nationalities.
