Course summary

Course Overview

Are you a ‘people person’? Do you have a genuine interest in people? Do you possess patience and perseverance? Then you could potentially become a social worker. As a professionally registered social worker you’ll make a difference to people’s lives.

Gain experience with working with vulnerable groups

Knowing how to help someone overcome their challenges isn’t easy. This course gives you the insight and knowledge to help them overcome barriers. Your study will combine classroom theory with real-life practice experience, some of which involves working alongside current social workers. You’ll also gain an understanding of how social work fits in with UK government policy and legislation.

Become a qualified social worker

This course will prepare you to safeguard both adults and children as part of a multi- disciplinary team as well as deal with issues as varied as school truancy, drug and alcohol abuse, housing and benefit difficulties and helping people get back into work. Once qualified, you can go into a range of settings including local authorities, hospitals, voluntary services, youth justice services and many more. But your options don't just stop at social work. You'll gain the necessary skills and knowledge that employers value such as team-working skills, high level communications skills, problem-solving skills and analytical and evaluative skills.

More placements, more choices

Bucks is a Placements Plus university. So, whatever degree you do, you can be sure there’ll be plenty of industry-relevant opportunities on offer, to help you get into your chosen field. We’ll also prepare you for work beforehand, with special skills for work training, further boosting your CV, and building skills employers will value. In recognition of the value we place on these skills we have incorporated this experience into your study time. Placements Plus is all about helping you get some valuable experience under your belt while you’re a student. To increase your choices later, and help you get the graduate-level job you want.

Employability

What are my career prospects

Qualified social workers practise in a wide range of settings in the statutory, voluntary and private sectors. These may include local authorities, hospitals, voluntary services for drug and alcohol users, mental health services and youth justice services.

There is a good choice of career options for suitably qualified people. Once qualified, social workers continue to undertake post-qualifying training to enhance and develop their knowledge and skills, so that they maintain their place on the register.

How will you help me prepare for my future career?

Throughout your time with us we’ll support you on the route to your chosen career. We’ll help you to develop crucial skills, encouraging you to become enterprising, employable and good leaders.

We run work placements for our students, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills in a work background. Our modules and teaching expertise will help you become more independent as a learner and more certain of your discipline expertise.
