Course summary

Enrich your study of criminology by exploring the sociological factors that give rise to crime. You could choose to enhance your employability with a placement.

Develop your critical analytical and interpretive skills and forge a deeper sociological understanding of the world around you.

As part of this course youll:

Learn to understand the complex social conditions that drive people to commit crime and how that expert knowledge can enhance your study of criminology

Critically analyse and challenge responses to crime in order to help shape a better society

Study a variety of topics such as modern theories of sociology and criminology, exploring issues such as youth crime, social exclusion and how the media shapes our perceptions of crime

Choose your own area of investigation when researching and writing your dissertation.

You'll engage with sociology and criminology equally. Through a blend of workshops, collaborative projects and observational field trips, youll be encouraged to drive your studies in the direction of your choosing.

Sociological projects can include creating wikis or presenting your work at a student conference. You could even see your critical essay published in our school's highly regarded sociology journal.

Teaching & Learning

Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. Youll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

Career Prospects

You will graduate with the expertise required for a wide variety of careers including civil servant, police officer, probation officer and community housing officer. Your proven critical communication and research skills will prepare you for postgraduate study and you could choose to continue your studies on the MSc Criminology course at Leeds Beckett.
