It encompasses everything that falls within the social realm, from family, class and ethnicity to deviance, sexuality and work roles. If you are intrigued by how and why people interact as they do, what brings them together and tears them apart and just where you fit into society, then a Sociology degree at Winchester will be an illuminating experience for you.The Foundation Year (first year of study) gives you the chance to commence your studies with us if you have not quite achieved the entry qualifications required or if you feel you would benefit from the opportunity to develop your study skills and subject knowledge prior to embarking on your degree. Through a range of engaging, small-group lessons and practical placements, you will be equipped with the academic, professional and personal skills to help you succeed at university. Modules will cover broad topics as well as an introduction to your chosen subject area. You will also have the opportunity to study alongside students undertaking a range of degree programmes.Over the course of years 1 (second year of study), 2 (third year of study) and 3 (fourh year of study), you examine a wide range of sociological issues, from the micro to the macro level. Modules range from health inequalities and diversity to religion, social policy, terrorism, and migration. They include global issues as well as domestic concerns. The programme is ideal if you have an inquiring mind, value the freedom to think and want to develop and enrich your sociological imagination.Studying sociology involves continuous interplay between matters of concern in society and concepts and theories of society. Throughout the degree there is an emphasis on the practical application of skills, and you are taught by engaging experts who are active researchers and passionate about their subjects. You can benefit from their specialist knowledge when they support you through a dissertation in Year 3 (fourth year of study). Additionally, external speakers and experts visit the University to share their learning and experience and there are study tours to places of interest such as the Houses of Parliament and Berlin.
