Course summary

The three-year programme will combine an understanding of traditions in sociological thought with the application of social theory, knowledge and practices, enabling students to build their own special interests through the duration of the programme. To this end, students can expect an awareness of classic sociological theories as well as cutting edge and contemporary approaches to the discipline to inform their studies. At the heart of the programme is an emphasis on how social theory, research and practice can address and understand epistemic injustice, rural and coastal deprivation, and help to dismantling disadvantage. In this way, it seeks to create proactive, innovative and solution-focused practitioners with the depth of vision to challenge the inevitabilities of the present disadvantage. Research will be at the core of the programme throughout all three years. As well as modules reflecting UoC specialisms (for example: criminology, gender, sociology of religion, the politics of everyday life, understanding inequalities, social ethics), students will be trained in a range of social research skills. In the third year students will be given the option of using these skills in placements with local organisations (such as the Cumbria CVS, Healthwatch, etc.) to conduct small research projects.

On this course you will...

- Create a research-informed, multi disciplinary, multi faceted programme addressing the needs of future students and our communities.- Have the opportunity to 'open up life, as well as career opportunities', 'value and undertake applied research that reinforces our place, people and practice role'.
