About this course

This degree will help you understand how societies are created and how they change. You will learn how educational attainment, ethnicity, gender and geography affects people’s place in society, including the resources they accumulate and the networks they build. You’ll leave with a different view of other individuals and the world around you. This course is taught with a practical approach, enabling you to apply your everyday experience to key issues and to gain critical-thinking skills that help you understand the theories that underpin these issues. Our expert teaching staff will develop your knowledge of what shapes society, considering issues such as politics, inequality, religion, the environment, human rights, family, identity, and the economy. You will explore issues through the context of health and illness, ‘race’ and ethnicity, power and politics, crime and deviance, and culture and communication.

Skills

Our BSc Sociology programme aims to ensure you graduate with a professional skillset that includes understanding how people live in society and how individuals can navigate and build positive communities. You'll become a sociologist capable of making a positive impact both locally and globally. Additionally, you'll develop research skills that enable you to apply sociology in ways that contribute positively and drive change through social and community activism.

Career opportunities

This course also has the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost your employability even further. And throughout the degree you will have access to employability events, guest speakers, and access to mentoring and careers support.Graduates of BSc Sociology develop essential skills for working in a variety of industries and businesses including the government and not-for-profit sector. A deep understanding of how societies are built and shaped can also springboard you to roles in the criminal justice system, community development and social work. The careers that Sociology graduates embark on are often varied. You could also work in the media, for a campaigning organisation, or in marketing and public relations.
