Course summary

Overview

The course offers students the opportunity to gain a wealth of experience and knowledge working as a make-up artist in preparation for direct employment within the make-up industry or further study.

Students on this programme will develop a host of practical skills such as; how to use a camera effectively in a studio and on location, design and apply character make-ups, postiche skills and developing highly sought after skills within prosthetic art.

The content of the programme encourages students to produce innovative ideas in visual imagery, explore creativity and link to the needs of the media make-up industry. The programme will prepare students to engage and work as artistic practitioners across a broad range of artistic makeup, including a variety of TV and media environments, theatre and photographic sectors, as well as preparing them to be an independent practitioner/artist.

Make-up artists in this region are highly sought after due to the BBC Media City at Salford Quays and the redevelopment of ITV's Granada Studios, which provide our learners with excellent opportunities to gain significant work experience.

Continuing Your Journey

Upon successful completion of the FdA Make-up, students may progress on to the BA (Hons) in Make-up Artistry or Special Effects in Make-Up Artistry.

Graduates from this programme are expected to find employment in a variety of multi-disciplinary practices, including television/film production companies, theatres or as freelance artists.

Students on this pathway have undertaken work opportunities for the likes of BBCs `Tubby and Enid', Lime Production's Pilot `Shelf Stackers', BBC Series `Candy Cabs', CBBC `The Slammer', BBC's `The Village'. The prosthetic modules have also equipped some learners to go on to become trainees to world renowned prosthetic artists operating within the TV and film industry.
