Course summary
OVERVIEW
Sport and exercise are more sophisticated than ever before. From its impact on our bodies to its impact on our communities, our understanding of the subject is growing every day. With that growth comes a whole range of specialist fields and niche subjects, not to mention a variety of career paths. This masters programme can prepare you for those possibilities, offering the mix of critical thinking, expert knowledge and professional skills vital for new areas of health, exercise intervention and sports education.
It’s a programme built on solid scientific and practical foundations, and provides an interdisciplinary perspective – giving you the chance to touch on areas like physiology, psychology, coaching studies, biomechanics and sports injury.
So, whether you see your future working in the lab, in the community or by the track, pitch or pool, we offer a route to the knowledge and skills you’ll need.
The Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences was ranked number one in the UK for student experience in the subject*. We’re home to an impressive range of facilities, from a state-of-the-art environmental chamber, to a 3rd generation pitch and biochemistry laboratory.
We’re also home to an impressive team, across a range of specialisms, from physiology, biomechanics and nutrition, to coaching and community sport. On our staff you’ll find the experts behind world-leading research, internationally recognised experts within their fields and active members of leading bodies.
Being based in a city where sport is in the DNA means there are few better places to build your future. Manchester is the setting for a massive variety of sports organisations, from grassroots to global elite, coupled with many local bodies and businesses working in health and fitness. And we have strong links to it all – clubs including Manchester City Football Club, research organisations like the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance and national bodies including UK Coaching and British Cycling.
In short, we offer everything you need to pursue a future in sport – following in the footsteps of our graduates who are now supporting elite athletes, coordinating community public health or delivering physical activity and rehabilitation programmes.
CAREER PROSPECTS
This is a course designed to prepare you for a specialist future in sport and exercise, whether that means professional roles or continued studies. While many of our graduates pursue their PhD after achieving their masters, many others have gone into senior roles within education, from international professors to Physical Education teachers to senior managers.
Many of the pathways can also lead to specialist coaching positions – helping you apply your expertise as a senior or academy level coaches, coach educator or performance analyst (to name a few), within community sport development. It’s also a qualification that can take you far within healthcare, whether working in rehabilitation, health promotion or as a physiologist with the NHS or private provider.
