About the course

The course is delivered at University Centre Myerscough and awarded by the University of Central Lancashire. This course is designed to provide the skills, knowledge and practical training required for a career in the sports industry, whether from a playing, coaching or business perspective. The Foundation Degree provides a comprehensive knowledge of sports studies and relevant practical experience. It covers a range of study areas including sports coaching, sports development, sports science and sports management and marketing.

The emphasis throughout the Foundation Degree is on the development of a range of professional and vocational skills. Modules are selected to ensure that students will develop the essential knowledge and skills to work in their chosen area of sport. These include the sporting infrastructure, coaching principles and practice, coaching in games, sports event management and sports development. The course is constructed around the modern coach and encourages students to develop innovative coaching ideas, underpinned by traditional values.

The course also provides students with a variety of coaching opportunities with local youngsters who comprise Myerscough’s successful junior and youth teams. There are numerous other coaching opportunities locally. Students also benefit from the opportunity to undertake a range of additional coaching qualifications.

Learning Environment:

Students find the course relaxed with approachable teachers. With the varying classroom environments, students feel energised within lessons.

Students are expected to undertake extensive independent study and research to support lectures, seminars and assessments. Group work and group presentations form an important part of the course. Students will have access to specialist IT hardware and software, an on-line learning environment and reference facility.

Assessment:

There is a wide variety of assessment methods, which help all learners. Practical assessments, written assessments, oral presentations and observations are spread across the course modules.

Progression

On successful completion of the course, students may apply for BA (Hons) Sports, BA (Hons) Sports Coaching.
