Course summary

This course focuses on your professional development as a practitioner in higher education.

Course description

This course provides professional development training for university lecturers and other staff who support teaching and learning in higher education.

Throughout, we encourage you to explore innovation and change in university teaching by engaging in scholarly debates on educational theory and practice. You'll also learn about research methodologies and techniques.

The course will develop your knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning support practices in higher education. Taught modules cover different aspects of contemporary practice, with a focus on educational change, assessment, curriculum and learning technologies. After studying the modules, you'll work with your supervisor to complete a dissertation.

Teaching

This course is research led. You will:

  • read about educational theory
  • write about educational practice – share ideas on teaching, learning and assessment methods
  • discuss ideas and practices with other students and course tutors.

Throughout the course you’ll work closely with your peers and tutors in a supportive environment so that you can reflect on and develop your practice.

Assessment

You’ll be assessed on a portfolio of work. You’ll build this portfolio as the course progresses, and with guidance from course tutors.

The portfolio might contain reflective or creative writing, examples of teaching and analysis, samples of students' evaluations, and comments on readings. The portfolio elements are usually written but we’ll consider other formats.
