Course summary

The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages [TESOL] will enable you to develop a strong foundation of knowledge about teaching English, as well as skills for classroom practice. You will be introduced to important theories about language teaching and learning, and links between theory and practice are continually emphasised throughout the course.

This postgraduate course provides a unique opportunity for students to enter the field of TESOL without having had prior teaching experience. There are five modules in total, which together enable you to experience varied and innovative perspectives of TESOL. You will learn about methods and approaches to teaching and focus on practical techniques as well as develop reflective and observational skills. There is a strong focus on developing your language awareness by exploring grammatical, lexical and phonological aspects of language as well as features of discourse. You will also learn about the principles of testing and research methods and be engaged in professional development activities. The course therefore enables you to develop the reflective and analytical skills you need to become a professional in the field.

Opportunities

Work and volunteer opportunities are often available through the University Language Academy or partner institutions. These provide a great chance for students to develop their employability skills and gain valuable experience in various areas of teaching and learning.

Opportunities also arise for students to become involved in research projects within the team.

We have graduates from our TESOL courses working in a variety of TESOL positions around the world. We have a well-established network of alumni from our courses with whom we can put students in contact with.

Graduates from the MA in TESOL are expected to move into various fields, including teaching, management, testing, course and materials design, training.

Suitable candidates may progress onto further postgraduate study (e.g. PhD).
