Course summary

Overview

Our distance-learning UK, EU & US Copyright Law course will introduce you to the main International Copyright Conventions. It deals with a wide range of rights (e.g. literary, dramatic, artistic works) as well as covering infringement and remedies and looks at the challenges presented by international communication through satellite and the internet.. This programme is studied by professionals alongside full time work commitments. The estimated time commitment is 240 hours of self study plus 32 hours teaching at the weekend seminars. Further time is needed in April for the coursework and May for examination preparation. Students are expected to manage their time independently.

Course detail

Our course is designed for practising lawyers, regulators and senior level copyright professionals in the entertainment and publishing industry. It will provide you with a general understanding of the substantive rules of EU law concerning copyright and related matters and the relation between domestic copyright protection and EU law. The UK, EU & US Copyright Law MA is only open to students who have successfully completed the UK, EU & US Copyright Law Postgraduate Diploma. Students on the MA course are required to write a dissertation under supervision.

Teaching and assessment

Students will be required to submit three 2000 word assignments in April the first year. Together these assignments constitute 45% of the final overall mark for the Postgraduate Diploma. In May 2022 there will be a written examination, the format of the examination will be confirmed nearer the time. (If the examination is in the traditional format of a 3-hour in-person examination, overseas students can make arrangements to sit the examination in their country. This will require an additional fee from King's College London and the overseas venue.) Successful candidates will obtain the Postgraduate Diploma in UK, EU and US Copyright Law. Results are graded into Pass (50-59%), Merit (60-69%) and Distinction (70%+). The follow-up MA is open to students who completed the Diploma. It involves the research for and writing of a 12000 -15000 dissertation under supervision. You are expected to spend at least 110 hours engaged in self-directed study. You are assessed exclusively by your dissertation which needs to be passed with 50%. Normally students are required to start with the MA programme within 2 years of finishing the PG Diploma programme, ie if you finish in academic year 2021/22, you can apply for the MA in academic years 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25.
