Course detail

The modern world has been shaped by centuries of warfare and by the prospect of future wars. Understanding the history of contemporary war is essential to understanding the world we live in today. Our War in the Modern World MA provides advanced and in-depth understanding of the evolution of contemporary war from 1945 to the present. This is all in the context of the enormous and wide-ranging political, technological, economic and social changes of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The course will equip you to engage critically with scholarly debate about the conduct and nature of contemporary warfare, and to understand the contexts in which modern conflicts take place. Our MA will equip you with the knowledge, skills and tools to tackle the security challenges facing the world today and into the future. You will develop advanced and in-depth understanding of the history and evolution of contemporary war and security, and the opportunity to develop your intellectual interests with a wide range of optional modules and substantial piece of research of your own. This will equip you with research, analysis and communication skills that are transferable to the workplace or to pursue advanced doctoral research. This MA is based in the Department of War Studies, one of the only academic departments in the world to focus solely on the complexities of conflict and security. War Studies is a multidisciplinary department and all War Studies students benefit from research-led teaching in a broad range of subjects. These include history and evolution of war and strategy, theories and contemporary problems of international relations, international law, war, ethics and justice, intelligence in war and peace, insurgency and counter-insurgency, seapower, along with regional specialisms covering Africa, Asia, Russia, the Middle East and elsewhere.
