Our new BA (Hons) Youth and Community course will aim to show how you can make a huge impact on the lives of young people and the communities they live in.The course will enable you to increase your reflective and critical learning skills, and show how these can be applied to “real life” settings with youth and community organisations in Birmingham and the West Midlands. This will be achieved through approximately 800+ hours’ worth of placement opportunities in the field, ensuring you graduate with vast experience in the sector.You will have an opportunity to explore a range of subjects that are relevant to young people and communities such as sexual and mental health, substance use and abuse, crime and rehabilitation, housing and homelessness and the environment. This type of modular approach enables you to engage with a range of subjects and graduate with the bespoke skills you need to pursue specific youth and community roles after graduating.On completion, you will be able to apply theoretical and practical skills in a range of jobs in areas such as youth work, social welfare and social justice, community development and housing, health and education. There are a variety of exciting possibilities open to you, ranging from our successful international travel scholarships scheme, through which you can spend a summer working for a charitable organisation overseas, to one of our many overseas study exchange programmes.- As a student on one of our undergraduate degrees, you will be able to benefit from our Graduate+ initiative. This three-year award course enables you to gain award levels for all the extra-curricular activities you undertake so that you can stand out from the crowd on graduation.- You will have opportunities to engage with our Birmingham 2029 project which seeks to map the city across a decade of change and be part of the Social Impact Hub which will enable you to engage with local organisations in the community and voluntary sectors.- The School of Social Sciences is recognised for being at the forefront of applied research, specialising in areas such as social identities, race and racism, hate crime, gender and violence and mental health. We have proud to have a vibrant research culture with five interdisciplinary research centres and a strong record of publications.- Gain an understanding of the contemporary world by practising a form of inquiry that is informed, knowledge-applied, evidence-based and interdisciplinary.- You will study in our state-of-the-art City Centre Campus, ideally located for you to take advantage of our links to industry in the UK’s second city.
