**Course Overview**Live, study and research surrounded by British endangered and protected species such as golden eagles, ospreys, red squirrel, Natterjack toad and red deer. Plus, a range of ecosystems and habitats that no other university can offer. Our course - designed by professional zoologists in consultation with wildlife trusts, consultants and Government bodies will boost your hands-on skills and teach you everything you need to become a professional in the field.- **Foundation year:** You'll build a firm foundation in working with data, biology, chemistry and essential academic skills, in preparation for the core Zoology programme- **Year 1:** You'll start by gaining a broad view of zoological topics, including molecular and cellular biology, animal form and function, ecology and conservation practice which involves visiting the full range of habitats in the region in search of wildlife.- **Year 2:** Develop professional-standard survey and research techniques which you put into practice during a fieldwork module, currently delivered in West Africa (where your project can add to the knowledge of some of the world's rarest species and help conserve them).- **Year 3:** You'll conduct a year-long research project, which can be a practical project utilising the skills you've developed during the course and can be focussed on the species of most interest to you. **Why Choose University of Cumbria**If you want to become a zoologist, then what better place than surrounded by the unique and ecologically diverse habitats of the Lake District, the Pennines and the Solway Firth as your outdoor classroom?You'll get an excellent understanding of British wildlife and the pressures it faces, because we are one of the few courses where you can become an expert in its identification a skill which is in great demand with potential employers.- Train in wildlife monitoring techniques with the kit used by professionals (which you can borrow to pursue your own interests)- Study in stunning new laboratories with cutting-edge technology and methods used throughout the professional world- Learn from academic tutors who are active zoologists and vets with close links to the industry, and internationally-renowned researchers- Our strong links with animal and wildlife conservation organisations in the UK and abroad provide you with excellent work placements, volunteering opportunities and job prospects- Take part in exciting placements, studying anything from brown bears to snow leopards and dolphins- The opportunity to do voluntary work alongside organisations such as Cumbria Wildlife Trust, to boost your CV and gain hands-on experience with a wide range of species e.g. adders, dragonflies, butterflies and birds- Conduct your own research in Africa and the UK (you can also get involved in academic tutors' scientific studies!)- Field work opportunity to the Gambia to work with critically endangered species- Practical-focused course so most of the time you'll be doing zoology hands-on (for example only 10% of the assessment in 1st year is by written exam)
