What is Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)?

  • One of the many fields of engineering that can be studied at a UK university, EEE deals with the study and real world application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism, and has been practiced since the 1800s.
  • Imagine a world without electricity. Without electrical engineering, that would be a reality. Without EEE, there would be no electrical engineers. You also cross over expertise with other engineering branches.

Why study EEE?

  • If you enjoy mathematics and science, are fascinated by energy and electronic gadgets, and want to design and invent things that benefit society, you may wish to study for an electrical and electronic engineering degree.
  • Electrical and electronic engineering covers a wide range of general principles and concepts. There is a particular crossover with aeronautical and mechanical engineering. Doing EEE makes you an all-rounder in engineering.
  • It is also a very creative subject, with many graduates find employment in the digital media industry, and in online engineering. Major areas include the development of optical and gigabit wireless communications.
  • EEE is one of the greenest engineering disciplines. Reduce our carbon footprint by developing renewable energy solutions, rolling out smart energy grids, and designing hybrid and all-electric vehicles.

Coursework, assessment and exams

  • Assessment consists of examinations, coursework, laboratories, presentations and project reports. Different courses assign each areas different weights.
  • EEE can be taught over any course length between three and five years. Different weights will be given to different years in these cases. Check your individual course.

  • MEng EEE with Management
  • MEng EEE with a year abroad

What qualifications do I need?

  • You may be selected based on GCSE scores as well as A levels.
  • Always confirm the entry requirements for the particular university/course you are interested in, requirements vary at each university or college.

What are the job opportunities?

  • EEE, as with most other engineering subjects, has a very strong prospects rating. It does offer more areas than becoming an electrician however.
  • Particular job areas include aerospace, broadcast, control, electrical, electronic or network engineer. Also applicable would be work as an IT consultant or systems analyst, or in a management role.
  • Several professional organisations offer specialised positions for EEE graduates, such as the Engineering Council.
