Sports Science studies how the body works during exercise and how this can promote health, both physically and mentally. However, Sports Science would be nothing without those who take part in the sports themselves. Similarly, in the modern era Sports Science has become such an integral part of a professional athletes life. Sports Science helps give athletes an edge that training alone could not give, identifying areas in which small improvements can lead to great success. In what is bound to be one of our most hotly-contested countdowns yet, here is our Top Ten Greatest Sports People of All Time.
10. Martina Navratilova
Even with the recent domination of women's tennis by the Williams sisters, there are still three names in the sport that are held above all others: Billie Jean King, Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova. Navratilova pips her colleagues to 10th in this list thanks to King's modesty. In 2006, Billie Jean King was quoted as saying that Martina Navratilova is "the greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player who's ever lived", and when a fellow legend says that you're the best of all time, you probably are. Navratilova is certainly deserving of such praise, holding the record of being the only player in history to have held the top spot in both singles and doubles for over 200 weeks. As the only tennis player, male or female, to have won eight different tournaments at least seven times, Martina Navratilova is definitely worthy of a place on our Top 10 Greatest Sports People of All Time.
