Considering Engineering for your undergraduate education? Be inspired by these engineers, from all walks of life and all disciplines, who have laid the foundations to what you could be studying.
4. George Stephenson
Born in Wylam, Northumberland, we could easily have included his son Robert on this list, who was called the greatest engineer of the 19th Century and rests at Westminister Abbey. Stephenson senior gets the nod, however, for doing it all first - he built the first public inter city railway line between Liverpool and Manchester in 1830. His rail gauge is also still used the world over as the standard measurement for rail tracks, which will no doubt be of interest to some of you.
