History

  • École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS de Lyon) is a highly selective higher education and research institute, established in 1880.
  • The Fontenay School for girls was founded in 1880 and the Saint-Cloud School for boys was founded in 1882. In 1981, the institutions became co-educational.
  • In 1987, the two schools merged but the scientific departments remained in the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, and the arts, humanities and social sciences remained at the École Normale Supérieure de Fontenay/St Cloud.
  • In 2010, the two institutions became one and retained the name École Normale Supérieure de Lyon.
