- Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGUM) was established in 1477 during the age of Gutenberg. It was closed under Napoleon around 1800 and reopened in 1947 by the French forces based in Germany after World War II.
- With the establishment of the Mainz University Foundation Fund in 1781, the University had gained a secure economic support and greatly extended its range of subjects and disciplines to include Historical Statistics and Cameralistics, etc.
- JGUM now combines most academic disciplines under one roof- i.e. 84 fields of study and a total of 219 degree programmes studied by a total of 36,500 students who are from 130 nations.
