- Founded with a papal concession in 1472 by Duke Ludwig the Wealthy of Bavaria-Landshut, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (or LMU Munich, in English) was Bavaria's first university.
- Since then it has moved twice and is now one of Germany's largest universities. It arrived in its present location in 1840.
- In 2006, LMU Munich was selected as a “University of Excellence” in Germany and received an additional 180 million euros to establish a graduate school.
