History

  • Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (Heidelberg University) was established in 1386 and is Germany's oldest university.
  • It is a state-funded research and teaching institution with many interdisciplinary alliances. The four outstanding research area foci are: molecular and cellular basis of life, structure and pattern formation in the material world, cultural dynamics in globalised worlds, and self-regulation and regulation: individuals and organisations.
  • Heidelberg University describes itself as having a strong international orientation, and this is notable through its research strength in international areas such as the study of "Asia and Europe in a global context". 
  • Graduate programmes are increasingly offered in English but most programmes are solely German-taught.
