International Students in the UK

Royce - UEA

Royce Jonathan Salim has come all the way from Indonesia to study for a BSc in Business Finance & Economics at the University of East Anglia. Despite the costly fees, Royce feels that the high standards of a UK education will prove worth it.

Why did you choose to study in the UK?

I opted for the UK because of the better education and living standards compared to my home country. Besides, I have always wanted the independent experience of living in a foreign country.

How did you find the application process?

I found it quite easy and straightforward because I applied through an agent.

Was it easy to find useful information about the UK?

Yes, it was fairly easy. I found the information mostly from websites and my agent’s recommendations.

How do the fees compare to your home country?

There is a massive difference in tuition fees. The UK is far more expensive than Indonesia. In Indonesia, you'd probably pay around £500 per semester whereas in UK, for the whole academic year, you have to pay approximately £10,000. But as I said before, I'm paying for better educational standards.

How are you finding the experience of living and studying in the UK?

It is very worthwhile and has been a life-changing experience. Apart from my academic life, I also have the chance to socialise with a lot of international students, which has made me very open-minded.

Anything you’re finding difficult?

I have found it difficult to have a close relationship with friends from the UK. It is probably because of the jokes that I don't quite understand, and the cultural differences.

What do you plan to do after your course?

Hopefully I can get a job in the finance sector after graduation or, worst case scenario, stay in education and gain a master's degree.

Do you feel that studying in the UK will help you to achieve your ambitions?

Yes, the level of independence and the number of opportunities to participate in the local community have helped a lot in preparing me for my future career.
