- When the long-awaited French speaking university Université de Montréal opened in 1878 it was as a branch of the Université Laval de Québec. It gained its status as an independent institution in 1919 and became secular in 1965.
- It has two affiliated schools, the École Polytechnique and the HEC Montréal, making it the largest university in Quebec and the second largest in Canada.
- In 2002 the university underwent a large-scale, ambitious construction project to update the facilities in some of the advanced research and teaching departments.
