  • Tulane University was established as the Medical College of Louisiana in 1834, partly in response to the fears of smallpox, yellow fever and cholera in America.
  • The college became a private university and was re-named Tulane in 1884 in honour of benefactor Paul Tulane, a wealthy merchant.  
  • In 1886, the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College was founded for women as part of the university.
