History

  • Wake Forest University (WFU) was founded in 1834. It was designed to teach both Baptist ministers and laymen under the name of "Forest of Wake", and emerged as "Wake Forest College" in 1838. 
  • Dr. William L. Poteat, the leading college figure in the early 20th century, won formal support from the Baptist State Convention for academic freedom at the College.
