  • Yale University was founded in 1701 in the Colony of Connecticut, and it is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States.
  • Originally the University was chartered as the Collegiate School and in 1718 was renamed Yale College to honour a gift from Elihu Yale, a governor of the British East India Company.
