After the MBA

Bruce Hellman - Imperial Alumni

Bruce did a Weekend Executive MBA at Imperial College Business School and has gone on to form his own digital health company. He believes that doing an MBA reflects running a business.

What are your job title, role and responsibilities?

  • I'm the CEO and co-founder of a digital health company.
  • I lead all aspects of the company, with a particular focus on sales, marketing, partnerships and operations.

How long ago did you take your MBA?

  • I studied for an MBA in the 2009–10 academic year.

How has the MBA helped you get to where you are now?

  • It has really helped me to be prepared to run my own company, and given me the confidence to understand all aspects of the business.

To what extent do you use the skills and knowledge you learnt on your MBA?

  • I use the skills and knowledge from the MBA on an almost daily basis. Running your own business is like a constant mini-MBA, comprising accounting, strategy, operations, people and economics.

What advice would you give someone considering pursuing an MBA?

  • Carefully assess why you want to do an MBA, and whether the MBA is really the best option for you. In the right circumstances it is an amazing experience that gives you the tools and experience to do new things. Don’t do it because you think it will give you an automatic payrise or promotion.
