After the MBA Course

Studying at Hull University Business School helped Helen Gibson to turn her early promise into a first-class business career.

“Taking the Executive MBA helped me into a first-class career and massively enhanced my business credibility", says Helen who studied for the Executive MBA at the University of Hull.

  • Now Joint Managing Director of Agencia (an East Yorkshire-based management consultancy), Helen took the Executive Masters in Business Administration course in 2007 to gain the essential business credentials for a switch to a new career in consultancy.
  • The Hull Executive MBA gave her what she needed, allowing her to take full advantage of the Business School’s world-class facilities, tuition and links with industry to gain a more rounded approach to her career.

"The MBA gave me that leg up,” she said. “I really enjoyed it. It was brilliant to have a year out, learning new skills and meeting interesting people. I learned so much – strategy, financial skills and marketing. It provided a great overview of so many different disciplines. And to have that time out of work, to stand back and work out what I was going to do next was a real luxury."

"Working with and getting along with people from different countries and backgrounds really boosted my confidence,” she said. “This has really helped me in the business world."

  • In the intervening years since taking the MBA, she has applied her learning in a succession of high profile roles including with the Cabinet Office and PA Consulting, culminating in her current position as Joint MD of Agencia, a management consulting firm founded by her father, Andrew.
  • Specialising in change management, with clients ranging from Local Authorities to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Helen oversees a broad portfolio that takes her as far afield as the Balkans and Malaysia. Working for the 'family firm' she knows she really has to prove herself in order to justify her role.

"Five years ago, I came to Agencia as a consultant and I’ve worked my way up," she said. "Thanks to the MBA, I’ve been able to do that. I earned my stripes before I came here. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way."
