Mark Leary - Imperial Alumni

After the MBA Course

Mark studied the full-time MBA course at Imperial College Business School. His MBA has given him the confidence to handle a variety of business situations.

What have you been doing since graduating?

  • I'm a Principal Consultant within the Programme Management Practice of a leading management consultancy firm. Responsibilities include programme delivery, turnaround of failing programmes and advising companies on project management best practice.

How long ago did you take your MBA?

  • I studied for an MBA in the 2009–10 academic year.

How has it helped you get to where you are now?

  • I joined a large US bank following the MBA, working within their Project Management Office delivering innovative and complex payments projects within the public sector. All of my team at the bank held MBAs from leading business schools and I wouldn’t have been offered the job without holding one myself. After three years at the bank, I then moved to a management consultancy, where the breadth of business knowledge I learned during the MBA gives me the confidence and ability to handle a wide variety of situations.

To what extent do you use the skills and knowledge you learnt on your MBA?

  • I would say that without realising it the MBA knowledge is often put into practice. I often look back on a day or week at work and notice that I have been using the MBA skills, be they specifics around for example finance or change management, or more general skills such as team building and organisational behaviour.

What advice would you give someone considering pursuing an MBA?

  • Go to open days at business schools, meet with current students and alumni and find out which school is the best fit for you. Understand the commitment that you will be making and decide which type of course (full-time verses executive) will work for you.
