Open days at University of Birmingham
Birmingham University is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities in the UK. Along with its research, the uni also has a reputation of innovation and was the first university in the UK to establish a department of computer science.
Birmingham University offers over 250 undergraduate courses and more than 350 postgraduate qualifications. It is considered particularly strong in the teaching of Physiotherapy, American Studies, Creative Writing, Physics and Astronomy and Tourism, Transport, Travel and Heritage Studies, among others.
It has a diverse student population with more than 20,000 undergraduate students and approx. 12,500 postgraduates from over 150 nationalities.
Facilities
The modern Main Library is one of the largest academic libraries in the country, home to 2.7 million books and open 24/7 during term time. The Special Collections department of rare books and manuscripts is also available to students.
There are several galleries and museums on site including the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Lapworth Museum of Geology and Winterbourne House and Garden.
The Sports and Fitness club is open to everyone with a 50m swimming pool, large multi-sports arena, squash courts, climbing wall and several activity studios.
Why go to an open day?
When you attend an open day, you'll get a gut feeling about the university. Open days will help give you clarity if you're not sure what course to choose. You'll be able to visit different departments and chat with lecturers and other department staff, there are often subject talks too. You'll also get to speak to current students. They can tell you whether they're satisfied with the teaching, what the local nightlife is like, what the best halls of residence are – pretty much anything. Don't forget to look at the accommodation for yourself and make time to walk around the surrounding area to see if you like it.
Where is it located?
The university has two campuses in Birmingham, one in Edgbaston and one in nearby Selly Oak. Both campuses are a bus or train journey out of the city centre.
Birmingham is a modern and affordable student city with a vibrant arts, music and events scene. It has four universities and a student population of over 65,000 from around the world. Birmingham has a lively nightlife with bars, music venues and restaurants dotted throughout the city.
For a large, urban environment there are a lot of parks and green spaces and is centrally located with great access to other cities across the UK.
