Open days at Birkbeck, University of London
Birkbeck was founded in 1823 and joined the University of London in 1920. It is unique because it specialises in evening study, allowing students to combine work, volunteering, and other commitments with their studies. Birkbeck was set up to educate working Londoners and has stayed true to its original focus on promoting lifelong learning and open access to higher education. Courses can be studied full-time or part-time with some including distance learning options.
Birkbeck is a leading research hub and home to over 50 research institutes and centres. The research informs public policy, pushes scientific, medical, and technological advances, supports the economy, promotes culture and the arts, and aims to make a positive difference to society.
Facilities
The university has a range of study spaces and facilities, including the Keynes Library open late and at weekends. The library service offers dedicated subject help, and disability and dyslexia support. The library has study spaces for diverse needs, with computers and a wireless network.
Why go to an open day?
When you attend an open day, you'll get a gut feeling about the university. Open days will help give you clarity if you're not sure what course to choose. You'll be able to visit different departments and chat with lecturers and other department staff, there are often subject talks too. You'll also get to speak to current students. They can tell you whether they're satisfied with the teaching, what the local nightlife is like, what the best halls of residence are – pretty much anything. Don't forget to look at the accommodation for yourself and make time to walk around the surrounding area to see if you like it.
Where is it located?
The university is made up of one main campus in Bloomsbury, London. This is very easy to get to by public transport. The nearest tube stop is Russell Street, about a 5-minute walk from the university's main entrance.
Birkbeck is in the heart of academic London and in one of the world's greatest concentrations of libraries. There is a cinema in Gordon Square that puts on free film screenings and the Peltz Gallery is also close by. You'll be in easy reach of a number of globally recognised locations including Covent Garden and Oxford Street.
