Open days at Northumbria University, Newcastle

Northumbria University is a research-intensive university with a global reputation for academic excellence. Students are taught by experts in their field, who remain active researchers and continue to develop their own expertise through collaborations with industry. 

Northumbria University is made up of four faculties: Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Law, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, and Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.  

Facilities  

Northumbria uni offers a wide range of student facilities including one of the best academic libraries in the UK, with around half a million print books, over 900,000 e-books, and around 85,000 e-journals. There's also a digital hub with study spaces and touch-down spaces across the campus.  

Sport Central has a gym and swimming pool, and you can also enjoy a wide range of online workouts at home.  

Why go to an open day?  

When you attend an open day, you'll get a gut feeling about the university. Open days will help give you clarity if you're not sure what course to choose. You'll be able to visit different departments and chat with lecturers and other department staff, there are often subject talks too. You'll also get to speak to current students. They can tell you whether they're satisfied with the teaching, what the local nightlife is like, what the best halls of residence are – pretty much anything. Don't forget to look at the accommodation for yourself and make time to walk around the surrounding area to see if you like it.  

Where is it located?  

Northumbria University has two campuses in Newcastle. The City Campus home to most of the faculties and is in the heart of the city. The Coach Lane Campus is about three miles away and is where the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is based. IT can be reached by car, bus or rail.  

The uni also offers courses in London and has recently introduced new programmes in Amsterdam.   

Newcastle is an exciting and vibrant city with plenty of cultural events, festivals and nightlife. Major music acts play at the O2 Academy, City Hall and the Utilita Arena Newcastle, which also hosts sports events and comedy shows. It's also one of the most affordable student cities to live and is compact enough to be able to walk or cycle pretty much everywhere. There are some lovely green spaces, such as Jesmond Dene and Exhibition Park and the sea is just a short metro ride away.  

Rankings

Northumbria University has been steadily moving up our UK university league table for the last few years, reaching 36 in 2024. It scored particularly well for its research intensity.
