5 'Alternative' Gap Year Ideas

We all know people who've been away to work in an a orphanage or build houses on their gap year, and we're not saying that these aren't worthwhile pursuits, but to get off the beaten track and try something a little different on your gap year, how about considering one of these less common options – courtesy of our friends at Projects Abroad:

Live and work with Nomads in Mongolia

Learn about an ancient way of life while getting away from it all by joining a group of Mongolian Nomads. This project gives volunteers the opportunity to live with a Mongolian family in exchange for helping with daily tasks such as caring for the livestock, herding cattle, teaching a bit of English and playing with the children.

Accommodation is in a large round tent called a Ger where you'll live with the family and become integrated into their daily lives, getting to know them better by playing traditional games and learning a little of the Mongolian language.
