The UCAS main deadline for most courses is January 31st, but even if you’re applying late, there are still options available. 

Submitting by January 31st ensures your application gets equal consideration for most courses. However, universities may still consider applications after this date and up until Clearing opens in July – though spaces might be limited.  

From February onwards you can explore UCAS Extra, or Clearing, which opens in July, for additional options.

Step 1: Set up a UCAS account 

Creating your UCAS account is simple and quick: 

Visit UCAS.com and select “Apply.” 

Follow the registration steps, providing basic personal details and creating a password. 

Once registered, log in to the UCAS Hub to start your application. 

Step 2: Choose your courses wisely 

With limited time, focus your research on a few key factors: 

• Your interests: Choose courses aligned with subjects you enjoy and excel in. 
• Career goals: Think about how each course fits into your future plans. 
• Entry requirements: Be realistic about your predicted grades and choose courses you’re likely to qualify for.

Step 3: Complete your personal statement 

The personal statement is a vital part of your application – even if you’re short on time, it needs to reflect your enthusiasm and suitability for your chosen course. 

Here’s a simple structure to follow: 

• Introduction: Explain why you’re interested in the course and what motivates you. 
• Academic achievements: Highlight your relevant skills, subjects, and projects. 
• Extracurricular activities: Showcase hobbies, work experience, or volunteering that complements your studies. 
• Conclusion: Summarise why you’re a strong candidate and express excitement about your chosen university and course. 

If you’re stuck, brainstorm your achievements, skills, and future goals to get started. Keep your tone enthusiastic but professional. 

Step 4: Get references ready 

Your reference is a crucial part of the application. To get it sorted quickly, approach your teacher, tutor, or referee politely, explain your tight deadline and provide key details about the courses you’re applying for to help them tailor their reference. 

Follow up promptly to ensure the reference is submitted on time. 

Step 5: Double-check your application 

Before hitting “submit,” review every section of your application carefully: 

• Personal details: Ensure everything is accurate. 
• Course choices: Double-check codes and entry requirements. 
• Personal statement: Proofread for spelling and grammar errors. 
• Reference: Confirm it’s complete. 

A few minutes of checking now can prevent costly mistakes later. 

What if you miss the deadline 

If the January 31st deadline passes, don’t lose hope. You can still apply through the usual UCAS application system until 30 June. Applications after this date will be automatically entered into Clearing. 

• UCAS Extra (February - Early July): If you put your application in after the 31 January deadline you can still use UCAS Extra to apply to one course at a time if you’ve used all five choices and aren’t holding any offers. 
• Clearing (Opens July): Ideal for finding a course if you miss grades or decide to apply late by applying directly into Clearing. 

Waiting until the next application cycle is also an option, but applying this year keeps your options open and saves time.
