Matthew's Clearing story

Matthew is studying a Business Management BA

Find Matthews advice on staying calm and how going through Clearing can find the right course for you.

Hi, I’m Matthew I'm 22, and I'm from Lancaster. I study Business Management and I'm in my final year.

The Clearing process was good and really easy and helpful on results day.

It is quite a roller coaster of emotions so being able to talk with the hotline at Northumbria was great. They were really helpful to kind of smoothen out that roller coaster of emotions that you've got, and by the end of the day everything becomes a lot clearer.

How was your school experience?

The teachers at the school were really helpful, they had seen other students go through the Clearing process, they knew all about it and were really helpful in guiding me where I needed to go and stuff.

How did you find the career service?

I've used the career service support before, they helped me develop my CV so that I could go out and seek opportunities for work placements. I don't think without their help my CV would have been up to the standard to get those placement opportunities.

I came back from my placement year and the careers service offer one-to-one support for returning placement students. The skills that we've gained from the placement we can then implement back into our CV’s and cover letters.

How was the career support?

I worked at HMRC throughout the placement year and was lucky enough to be kept on part-time whilst I came back and studied for final year.

I've also been lucky enough to be then kept on to have a full-time role once I graduate as well, so it kind of shows the impact that the placement can have on the future career that I want.

My second year was during covid as well so I was kind of nervous that I wouldn't be able to get the placement, but I think through having that CV, and all the career support, and interview practices, it helped me to get a placement at the HMRC.

What advice would you give to students?

Don't stress it, don't overthink, it'll all get sorted and it'll all work out for the better. You'll meet lots of amazing people, and you'll have lots of amazing experiences.

Just grasp every opportunity that comes your way go on like the social media sites, you can communicate with other students who might be in your accommodation because it's really important that you make sure to surround yourself with good people who can make your experience as good as it can be, because at the end of the day people are what make your experience throughout university.
