Clearing success story: Nottingham Trent
Read about Yusuf's experience of getting a place through Clearing to study International Relations and Arabic at Nottingham Trent University.
What degree did you originally apply for and where?
I waited until I had my results to apply to university.
Why did you use Clearing?
I waited until I had my results, so used the Clearing process to apply to university. This was something that not a lot of people are even aware you can do, and some really wish they had given themselves more time instead of rushing to meet the January UCAS deadline. One reason I did this was because my predicted grades were very uncertain. However, it was mostly because I wanted to take my time deciding what and where I wanted to study.
Why did you choose International Relations and Arabic at Nottingham Trent?
I did quite a bit of research on the Notting Trent University (NTU) website before results day, so I knew which courses had spaces. I even visited Clifton and City campuses on their June open day, where there was a stand dedicated to help potential 2019 entrants. Combined, this all meant that when I opened a good set of results on results day, I was quick on the phone to the NTU clearing team, who were so helpful.
Did you attend a Clearing open day? How was it?
One reason I applied to NTU was because I really enjoyed the open day. I found the staff and campuses welcoming and helpful, and this really made my decision easy. I loved (and still do) Nottingham. Coming from a rural area, city life was such an upgrade. The shopping, restaurants and entertainment are second to none, as is the award-winning public transport network. I also felt comfortable picking NTU because of their strong reputation. In recent years they have won many awards. The course information on the website was exciting and detailed.
How was your university experience?
My course and my surroundings constantly inspire me to work harder and create my best work. The social opportunities between three campuses are vast too, as you’re guaranteed to meet friends for life. I also love how student-friendly the city is. The vast range of shops, restaurants and bars never ceases to amaze me, and most places offer student discount. The nightlife is so enjoyable, whether you prefer a quiet cocktail or a gig at rock city, there’s definitely something for everyone.
