Clearing success story: UEA

Find out all about Freya and James's experience of getting a place through Clearing to study at UEA.

Freya and James share their experience of getting a place through Clearing to study at UEA.

Freya

BA Education student

Hi, I’m Freya, I studied a BA in Education here at UEA and I’m now studying my PGCE here too.

Why did you go through Clearing?

On A level results day I didn't quite get the grades I needed to join the BSc Psychology course and this was really stressful, but I contacted UEA through their Clearing open lines and discussed that I was interested in teaching, and they offered the BA Education course as an alternative.

Clearing gives you another chance if you didn't make the predicted grades or you did better than expected, and it gives you a chance to explore options that are better suited to you.

What would be your advice for students who are unsure which uni to go to?

Attending the Clearing open days, talking to the lecturers, and meeting current students really helped clarify what the course is and helped get a feel for the course and the university. Find out if a foundation year is available.

Clearing can be a real opportunity, it's super easy to apply but it can vary from uni to uni. Check how you contact them, they may have a chat line, they may have a phone line or both. Check out your universities of interest in advance and see what they're doing.

James

Economics student

Hi, I’m James, a final year Economics and Politics student.

Why did you go through Clearing?

I made the decision to go into Clearing after my two backup offers were rejected.

The choice of UEA came directly from a phone call where their interest in me as a person was instant.

It really made me think about what I wanted to study, the benefit of Clearing is that you can do that.

If you focus on course content don't be swayed to study something if you're not interested in it.

What's your advice for students going through Clearing?

Be prepared, don't panic, Clearing opens early in July, have a look at some alternatives alongside some different universities as well.
