Sophie unexpectedly found herself going through Clearing on results day. Now she's really happy that her plans changed and that she's studying at the University of Hull.

Why did you enter Clearing?

My clearing experience started at 6 00am on results day. I opened my results, and I didn't get into my confirmed nor my insurance choice.

It meant I didn't have a university place. So, the next thing I knew was that I had to go through Clearing – which entailed ringing other universities up and seeing if they'd give me a place.

What happened on your Clearing calls?

After ringing quite a few universities I got a few offers and a few more rejections. But one of the places that did give me an offer was the University of Hull.

What was nice is that they wanted to know about me as a whole and not just my A Level results. They asked about why I wanted to do Law what my GCSE results were – just to get the full picture.

Straight away I knew that the uni liked people for their personalities and not just their academic grades.

Did you visit the university and, if so, how was it?

I didn't want to accept a place there and then without looking around the university. So, the next day me and my family got in the car from Preston and went up the motorway to Hull – and I just fell in love with it, there and then.

I knew that there was no time to waste, so I actually accepted my place in the library!

Did you find a place to live easily?

I was a little bit apprehensive about accommodation. There is a stigma that if you come through Clearing, then you don't get a nice accommodation or you get the last pick. But there is a guarantee that all first-year students get accommodation.

Are you glad that you went through Clearing?

I just love Hull, and I couldn't recommend it enough. Even though I came through Clearing, and it wasn't my first choice. As cliched as it sounds, everything happened for a reason – and I'm so glad that I ended up at Hull.
