University of Southampton Clearing Success Story

What is your name?

Nivedita.

What degree had you originally applied for, and at which institution?

I initially applied for Medicine at Cardiff, Leeds, Sunderland, and Keele University.

What degree are you now studying, and at which institution?

Environmental Geoscience at the University of Southampton.

Why did you enter Clearing?

After taking A Level geography, further research made me realise that medicine was not the degree for me. Between January in Year 13 and A Level results day, I explored alternative degree courses that drew on my interests in biology, chemistry, and geography. Choosing to study Environmental Geoscience was the best decision I could have made.

What factors made you finally settle on the course you chose?

Environmental Geoscience offered multidisciplinary module options covering a range of subjects. This allowed me to explore my interests in depth before having to specialise in one. What's more, it helped me develop diverse skills in critical thinking, programming, and field skills – all essential for entering the workforce. I also thought it was really cool to be able to study at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, and have my own research and study space.

Did you attend a Clearing open day and, if so, how was it?

I was given a tour around the the National Oceanography Centre at the Waterfront Campus on results day by lecturers who were incredibly welcoming and helpful (and convincing!). They went out of their way to clear my doubts and reassure my parents that I would be well supported academically and pastorally. I had a really positive experience and I left Southampton that day with a good feeling.

Did you find accommodation easily through Clearing?

I had a guaranteed place in accommodation, but I understood that I wouldn’t have much choice. However, I was really lucky with the accommodation I was allocated. It would be good to consider your priorities like distance to campus, shops, cost, and whether you want an en suite or shared bathroom.

Have you enjoyed your course and time at university so far?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University of Southampton! I have made amazing friends, the lecturers are incredibly supportive, and there’s loads to do in the city. It feels like a home away from home and I couldn’t see myself studying anywhere else.

What factors made you finally settle on the course you chose?

I chose Environmental Geoscience at the University of Southampton because of the strong networking opportunities that studying at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton can provide. The lecturers were incredibly welcoming and addressed all my concerns.
