Why study in Birmingham?

Birmingham is a modern student city in central England with a vibrant arts, music and events scene. With four universities, Birmingham has a student population of over 65,000 from around the world. It has a wide range of halls and private accommodation to suit your needs. For a large, urban city, Birmingham has a lot of parks and green spaces and is centrally located with great access to other cities across the UK.

Birmingham has three main train stations -- Birmingham Snow Hill, Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham New Street. All three have links to other parts of the country in relatively quick times. For example, a direct train from Birmingham to London will take between 90 minutes and 2 hours, costing between £15 and £25. This of course will decrease if you have a student railcard. 

Birmingham has a very effective public transport system with over 50 different bus companies offering their services, eight of them serving the university. National Express also has its headquarters in Birmingham, so there’s another cheap and easy way to travel to other cities in the UK. 

The city is served by Birmingham International airport, with easy access to European destinations as well as those countries further afield. The airport can be reached by both buses and train. 

University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham is consistently in the top 20 universities in the UK, offering courses in a wide range of disciplines. It has a history of research, innovation and excellent teaching, nestled in the heart of a leafy campus with close links to Birmingham city centre. 

Location 

The University of Birmingham main campus is located in Edgbaston, and there’s a further campus in Selly Oak. See the university profile page for an interactive map and more information. 

The University of Birmingham has a free shuttle bus operating between the Edgbaston and Selly Oak campuses as well as a £1 fare for students from the Selly Oak campus, operated by National Express West Midlands, who also offer student passes, allowing travel for as little as £1.25 a day.

The University of Birmingham has one of the largest libraries in the country as well as a range of on campus facilities like theatres, hairdressers and a large sports centre.

Aston University

Aston University is set in the heart of Birmingham and home to a large and diverse student population. Aston is also known for its impressive graduate prospects and its links to graduate employers.

Aston University offers a campus experience in the heart of a large city, with a large library with both physical and digital resources and several computer labs available for study.

Birmingham City University

Dating back to 1843, Birmingham City University achieved uni status in 1992 and has only grown since to now have 25,000+ students from around the world. 

Location 

Birmingham City campus is located in central Birmingham alongside Aston University’s campus with a further City South campus in Edgbaston. See the profile page for an interactive map and more information.

Newman University

Founded in 1968, Newman University is an innovative university that challenges and inspires students to think creatively and individually, set in the outskirts of Birmingham. 

Location

The university is located a few miles to the south west of Birmingham in a rural location overlooking the Bartley reservoir, See the profile page for an interactive map and more information. 

The number 23 bus offers a frequent service from the Newman campus and the surrounding areas to the centre of Birmingham. Several other forms of public transport also offer easy access across the county. You can see several ways to get around on the university page. 

Facilities

Newman University offers a large, single campus with access to extensive resources, both digital and printed. It also has a huge support network and several advisors and ways to encourage independent thought.
