A Student's Diary – Applying to University

Elizabeth Wright

Homework = Revision

That’s my thought for the month. With the amount of homework piled on me by teachers lately (including but not limited to: entire past papers, mind maps, quote banks, and extra reading) I’ve been stressing out because I literally do not have enough hours in the day to do all of this, plus all the revision I need to do, and it’s almost the Easter holidays, and exams are so close now etc etc. I feel like Eeyore form Winnie the Pooh, with my literal dark cloud of stress. I have enormous sympathy for anyone resitting AS Levels (because I am too). You don’t get lessons on it or homework set for it and the prep can sometimes take a backseat.

That’s when I realised:

Homework IS revision! Yes that’s right, homework is technically a form of revision, and that makes me feel a lot better. In a lot of my subjects now we have finished or are close to finishing, so all the homework we are being set is in preparation for the exams. I’ve actually been doing a lot more work than I thought I had. Not to say I can get away with doing no revision now.

This month I have also been taking advantage of the ‘post-offer applicant days’ at my first and second choice universities. While these days are pretty much along the same format as the open days, they allow you to go to the department and speak to staff and current students. Make sure you get the most out of your day visiting and here's why to go:

Special mentions to the University of Hull (pics below) for giving me a place on their Talent Development Programme. This now means that I am definitely going to university in September, and while I spent many previous blog posts complaining about people who have unconditional offers – well I now have one myself – and I didn’t sell my soul – at least I don’t think I did.
