2. University of Nottingham

Placing 19th overall in the UK, the University of Nottingham gets the highest score for Research Quality in the East Midlands, as you might expect from the region's only Russell Group university. It was at the University of Nottingham in 1977 that Sir Peter Mansfield and colleagues made the breakthrough that led to MRI scanners being used in hospitals around the world. The university also offers the best score for students gaining a Good Honours of 2:1 or above, and is one of two universities in the East Midlands group to gain a top-ten Graduate Prospects ranking this year – suggesting the area might be a good place to start your career.

Nottingham is a dynamic county capital with big-city aspirations, fascinating historical sights and a buzzing music and club scene thanks to its spirited student population. It also has more sports facilities per head of population than anywhere else in Europe.
